Classroom Updates

Hello 5D Families,

We are two weeks into our Best Year Ever! It has been a fabulous two weeks! We have all had the opportunity to learn about what 5th grade looks like, what our main goals will be this year, and we are learning a lot of fun facts about each other. I just can't say this enough: we have a SUPER group of students!

A few notes about routines/homework that began this week:

Math - We are off to a great start with fractions! Please remind students of the homework club form that was signed at the beginning of the year. One missing assignment will unfortunately remove the student from the homework club for that month. So far, so good! I hope the parent letters are helpful to you when providing assistance to homework.

Rocket Math - Students are on their way to mastering multiplication facts! This is a program we will complete every day, or most days.

Xtra Math - I understand that many students have had a variety of glitches with their new Xtra Math logins. Be sure your child is using their NEW enrollment codes, and not using a home login, or last year's login. We are going to practice logging in as a class next week; hopefully we can iron out any wrinkles that may still exist! Students should complete the multiplication level by November.

Reading - Reading logs should be traveling home and to school each day in the homework folders. Students should keep track of school reading time AND homework reading time each day. Time read during school does NOT count toward the 20 minute reading goal each night. Reading responses will be due each Monday and can be hand written or emailed to me each week.

Benchmark reading assessments also took place this week. Students are encouraged to find "good fit" books that they are able to comprehend, but that still provide some challenge. I will encourage students to also broaden their interests among genres, while keeping track in their 40 Book Challenge and book log. If ever you or your student want to check a book level, simply type the title into Scholastic's website and look for the Guided Reading Level that will be listed as long as Scholastic has that book in their "library." Our goal is level T by the end of first trimester.

Science - We began our first science switch this week. Our class visits Mrs. Dodson's room to study Body Systems. This will run for 3 more weeks, and then we will switch classrooms and units.

Writing - We completed our first On Demand writing assessments for the beginning of the year. We will begin studying Memoirs soon as we dive into our next unit!

Thank you for viewing and signing agendas each night, and Friday Folders as well. As always, I am just an email away! HAPPY WEEKEND!

~Mrs. Moss

Student Opportunity - Be a part of Elf the Musical Jr.!

Hello 5D Families,

Please see the attachment below regarding auditions for students in Baldwin Street Middle School's fall production of Elf the Musical Jr.

If your child is interested, and can be committed to this production, please let me know and I will email you the audition form and calendar! What a fun opportunity!

~Mrs. Moss

Baldwin Street Middle School
ELEMENTARY CHORUS Audition Information for the Fall 2015 production of
Elf the Musical Jr.
Auditions: Saturday, September 26, 2015 - 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm (by appointment) - BMS Choir Room Rehearsals Begin: Saturday, October 3, 2015 - 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm - BMS Choir Room Performances: Friday, November 20, 2015 and Saturday, November 21, 2015

Future Members of the Elementary Chorus:
Let me welcome all of you and share my excitement about this upcoming event! Baldwin Street Middle School is so excited to offer this opportunity to our students and community. In this letter you will find all of the information you need to participate in our production of Elf the Musical Jr. Attached you will find the audition materials, a rehearsal calendar, and a participant application form. Students in the elementary chorus will be expected to sing and perform simple choreography and will appear onstage at both performances in November.
Auditions for students interested in performing on stage will be held on September 26 in the BMS Choir Room from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in 15-minute time slots. Students are asked to prepare a short song of their choice. Students should wear shoes and clothing appropriate for dancing. Sign up for an audition time using this link: http://bit.ly/1FwPHGa

Children auditioning for the elementary chorus will need to be in the BMS Cafeteria no later than 15 minutes before their scheduled audition time. All students must bring a completed participant application form and be ready to perform a short song. Students will audition in small groups of 6 to 8 students.

This is a major commitment. Please read the form carefully and discuss if involvement with this production fits with your schedule. Parent volunteers are needed for each Saturday rehearsal. If your child is cast in the production, you will receive an email asking you to sign up for one (or more) rehearsal blocks.

Students in the elementary chorus will be asked to provide plain red pants or leggings for their costumes. Green, red, and/or white Christmas socks will also need to be provided by each student in the elementary chorus. Each student will also need to bring a “regular” winter outfit and coat for scenes in set New York City. Elf shirts and hats will be provided by the production.

If your child is cast as a member of the elementary chorus, you will be contacted via email to confirm your child’s participation. Please remember that, for every child cast in the musical, one (or more) child(ren) were not asked to participate in the production. If your child is not cast for this show, you will receive an email with information about how to audition for the Riley Street Middle School musical that is produced in the spring.

The first rehearsal is on Saturday, October 3 in the BMS choir room from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Parents must provide all transportation to and from each rehearsal. Children must be signed in by an adult when they are dropped off at BMS. No child will be released without a signature and photo ID of an individual listed on the original audition forms. If you must make any changes to who is picking up your child from rehearsal, contact Mrs. Maurice and send a signed note on the day of the rehearsal with the full name of the individual picking up your child.

Rehearsals move to the NEW Auditorium at the Freshman Campus on Monday, November 18. Elementary Chorus students must be brought to the Auditorium by a parent. Again, students will only be released to authorized individuals and must be signed out before they will be released. Rehearsal runs from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm with the exception of tech and dress rehearsals. Tech and dress rehearsals will take place during the week before the show and run until 8:30 pm. See the attached rehearsal calendar for further details.
Please be aware that parents are responsible for all transportation to and from rehearsals at BMS and the HFC. Please contact Mrs. Maurice if you have any concerns.

Parent volunteers are needed to help with several areas of the show. The success of this production is largely dependent upon the wonderful talents and donation of time that the parents invest in the production. We are asking that every parent volunteer a minimum of one rehearsal to support the production. Contact Mrs. Maurice if you have any additional questions.

Participation in the musical is a MAJOR commitment. Review the attached calendar and be prepared to attend all of the rehearsals. Please indicate on your application if there are any conflicts. Once a student has been cast, we need their full dedication to this project. Each student that is given a place on the cast means that another student who auditioned or applied was not offered the opportunity to participate in this production. Discuss this as a family and contact Mrs. Maurice if you have any questions or concerns. The rewards of participating in the musical far outweigh the commitment of time and effort, but this decision needs to be made on an individual basis.

Last night's Open House

Hello 5D Families!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who were able to make it to Open House last night! It was so great to meet you all, and I am thrilled to be beginning this year with such WONDERFUL students! Thank you for making me feel right at home here at Jamestown. It truly is going to be a great year! If you were not able to make it to Open House, I will be sure to send home any items you would have received.

Also, a big thanks to those of you who were able to sign up to help with a party or celebration this year. We couldn't do it without you!

I have really enjoyed reading the student and parent surveys. I have learned so much already and find all of the included information extremely valuable.

I am wishing you all a fabulous weekend and look forward to seeing you on Tuesday. Please have the forms sent home in the folder last night returned to school as soon as possible.

Only 5 days until your Best Year Ever begins! I can't wait!
