Classroom Updates

Hello 5D Families,

We are two weeks into our Best Year Ever! It has been a fabulous two weeks! We have all had the opportunity to learn about what 5th grade looks like, what our main goals will be this year, and we are learning a lot of fun facts about each other. I just can't say this enough: we have a SUPER group of students!

A few notes about routines/homework that began this week:

Math - We are off to a great start with fractions! Please remind students of the homework club form that was signed at the beginning of the year. One missing assignment will unfortunately remove the student from the homework club for that month. So far, so good! I hope the parent letters are helpful to you when providing assistance to homework.

Rocket Math - Students are on their way to mastering multiplication facts! This is a program we will complete every day, or most days.

Xtra Math - I understand that many students have had a variety of glitches with their new Xtra Math logins. Be sure your child is using their NEW enrollment codes, and not using a home login, or last year's login. We are going to practice logging in as a class next week; hopefully we can iron out any wrinkles that may still exist! Students should complete the multiplication level by November.

Reading - Reading logs should be traveling home and to school each day in the homework folders. Students should keep track of school reading time AND homework reading time each day. Time read during school does NOT count toward the 20 minute reading goal each night. Reading responses will be due each Monday and can be hand written or emailed to me each week.

Benchmark reading assessments also took place this week. Students are encouraged to find "good fit" books that they are able to comprehend, but that still provide some challenge. I will encourage students to also broaden their interests among genres, while keeping track in their 40 Book Challenge and book log. If ever you or your student want to check a book level, simply type the title into Scholastic's website and look for the Guided Reading Level that will be listed as long as Scholastic has that book in their "library." Our goal is level T by the end of first trimester.

Science - We began our first science switch this week. Our class visits Mrs. Dodson's room to study Body Systems. This will run for 3 more weeks, and then we will switch classrooms and units.

Writing - We completed our first On Demand writing assessments for the beginning of the year. We will begin studying Memoirs soon as we dive into our next unit!

Thank you for viewing and signing agendas each night, and Friday Folders as well. As always, I am just an email away! HAPPY WEEKEND!

~Mrs. Moss
